Below are a few cricket players that have gone on to create a lasting impression in the minds of the people.
Sachin Tendulkar
He is the god of all cricketers, and he has been called the god of cricket. Starting his career at the age of 16 years he went on to make his debut at this tender age. In terms of records, he has 100 international hundreds to his credit and is the first batsman to have scored a double hundred in one-day cricket. Wisden has gone on to rank him among the greatest batsmen of this century, and behind Viv Richards, he is the second most popular one-day cricket player. In his cricketing career, he has gone on to win national awards and even the highest civilian award.
Kapil Dev
The former all-rounder was the captain of the Indian cricket team that went on to win the World Cup in 1983. Towards the end of the 1990s, he was the Indian coach for a brief period of 10 months. Also known as the Haryana Hurricane, he went on to represent Haryana in domestic cricket. Though he retired in 1994, he had 434 test wickets to his credit that were broken by Courtney Walsh. He is the only player in test cricket of having taken 400 wickets and scored 5000 runs. In 2010, the ICC went on to induct him into the hall of fame.
Vijay Hazare
From the state of Maharashtra, he was an Indian cricketer. Between 1951 and 1953, he went on to captain the Indian cricket team for 14 matches. He is credited with having been the first captain when India won their first test, and it was the only victory out of his 10 tests. The BCCI has gone on to honour him by dedicating a trophy in his name to a zonal cricket tournament in India. Along with Jasu Patel, he was given the Padma Shri.
Sunil Gavaskar
The former Indian cricketer went on to play test cricket for the Indian team in the 1970s and 80s. He is rated to be one of the best opening batsmen and had the record for the most runs along with centuries at the time of retirement. His 34 test centuries stood ground for a considerable period of time. It was broken by Sachin Tendulkar in 2005. He had an admirable technique against fast bowling, as the bowlers that he faced during the era were nothing short of outstanding. Presently, he is one of the most admired voices in world cricket.
Rahul Dravid
He is rated as one of the best Indian batsmen, and in cricketing circles, he is referred to as “the wall.” Some of his records show that he has achieved the rare double of 10,000 runs in test cricket and one-day cricket. After completing his century against Bangladesh in 2004, he was the first player to score centuries against all test-playing nations. There is another record to his name as he has gone on to hold 210 test catches which are apart from a wicketkeeper. The government of India has conferred him with the Padma Shri award.
Saurav Ganguly
Known as “Dada” in Indian cricket circles, the former president of the BCCI He is credited with bringing about a killer attitude in the Indian cricket team, and as a captain, he picked players and then went on to back them. Some of the new players credit a lot of their achievements to Ganguly’s leadership skills. In 2004, he was conferred the Padma Shri, and Wisden did rank him among the top 10 one-day batsmen of all time. Hardly a few cricketers are in the limelight after their cricketing careers, and he is still right up there,
MS Dhoni
He is rated as one of the greatest finishers in the world of cricket and one of the few successful Indian captains who has gone on to lift almost all the ICC trophies. Well, who could forget the great innings and the smart move of promoting himself up the order in the world cup final of 2011 against Sri Lanka? In 2009, he also went on to lead India to the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings. Currently, he is also playing for CSK in the IPL, and people admire him for all the right reasons.
Virendra Sehwag
An aggressive right-hand batsman with his handy off-spin and holds the record for the fastest 250 and 300 runs in test cricket. In test cricket, he has gone on to touch the magical figure of 300 runs a couple of times, and in one of the test matches along with it, he went on to claim 5 wickets. Very rarely are you likely to come across such a situation in a test game. After Sachin Tendulkar, he went on to score a double century in one day of cricket. In fact, he is the only player in the world to score a double century in test cricket and a triple century in test cricket.
Virat Kohli
King Kohli, as he is known, was the captain of the Indian cricket team for a considerable period of time. He is one of the few players in the world who has taken fitness levels to another level. In the recently held world cup in Australia he was the top scorer. If estimates are to be believed he is in the running to match up to the 100 international hundreds of Sachin Tendulkar. He would have been there but his form in the last 3 years has been scratchy.
